Please explain why some odontogenic tumors are non-painful?

Slow growing: Usually odontogenic tumors are very slow growing and are not diagnosed until they become quite large or become secondarily infected. This is why it is recommended to have a general dental examination and x-rays done periodically in the event you have one. It is always best to diagnose and treat them when small.
