OMG!!!: This advice is new to me. Better see a root canal specialist and listen to sound advice. If potassium nitrate worked on blocking the pain, i would love to see a study on it. In the mean time, get the proper and proven treatments.

Tooth root : If you really have a problem involving the nerve or your tooth, potassium not ratites won't work. If howeever you have root sensitivity that is transient to cold or stimulus then potassium nitrate will work and can be used indefinitely without any problem. The trick with potassium nitrate sensitivity toothpastes is they have to continuously be used to work. Crest makes sensistrips that you try out

Root canal pain: Not sure about your question... has root canal therapy been started or completed? If there is no nerve in the tooth, potassium nitrate will have no effect. Please see a dentist to diagnose your problem.
