Could you pick up acute kidney failure by having a kidney infection?

Not necessarily: If you already have problems with your kidneys that have caused them to not work normally, then an infection can make things worse. If your kidneys are functioning normally, it would be very unlikely to have acute renal failure with a kidney infection. Parenthetically, infected kidneys will lose some of their function, but treatment of the infection should restore things to normal.
