Nerve or muscle: Sometimes it's a peripheral nerve firing spontaneously; sometimes it's a muscle twitching(which you can usually see). If this is only a localized problem, then it doesn't sound serious. However, with widespread occurrence i would recommend a neurologic exam and blood tests.
