A member asked:

I'm on bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and diamox. both can contribute to kidney stone formation. if i drink a gallon of water or more a day will this reduce the risk?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) not associated with increased stone risk like older sulfa drugs. Diamox, yes as it lowers urinary citrate, an inhibitor of calcium stone formation. Regardless of composition of urinary stones, the best and most effective preventive measure is increased fluid intake with the goal of making 2.0-2.5 l (~65-85 oz) urine/24 hrs. How much to drink to achieve that goal depends on many factors.
