A member asked:

I have a flesh colour mole on my scalp, had it all my life, but i do think it is a little larger but i'm unsure could this be cancerous?

Very unlikely: There are several types of moles or nevi. On the scalp, epidermal nevus is one of the most common, although nevus sebaceus or even a plain intradermal nevus or compound nevus could be the cause. Things present at birth are nearly always benign and so probably not to worry. You are just bumping or rubbing it (with a crush or comb?).

Scalp Mole: A flesh colored mole is unlikely to be cancerous. The signs looked for are: asymmetry of pigment, irregular border, color variation, dark or large mole, and a mole that is evolving in color, size, or starts to itch. If you want to make sure, see your local dermatologist.

It's possible: It doesn't sound too concerning since it's been there your whole life. However, if it's getting larger, you really should have it looked at and possibly removed. The only way to know if something is skin cancer is to biopsy it. And rarely, melanomas can be flesh colored. Let a doctor decide whether it needs to be removed. And avoid sun exposure on your scalp!
