Varies: Dark spots after acne is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (pih). It can be treated with peels (mini & full melange peel), lasers, & good skin care products with hydroquinone, vitamin c which are depigmenting and Retin-A which is exfoliating. Superficial microderm and peels will not penetrate deep enough if the scars have been there for a long time but are fine if they are relatively new.

Dark spots: If an acne scar's only problem is a visible dark spot, it may be lightened with lightening creams. These can be purchased over the counter in drugstores but must be used religiously twice a day for several weeks to see results and sun must be avoided during this time. If that doesn't work, lasers can be very effective. See your doctor for that.
