A member asked:

How is sedation used for refractory vomiting?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No sedation: Sedation is not used for refractory vomiting as there would be danger of the sedated patient aspirating her vomitus which could be lethal. Rather, antiemetics and/or nasogastric intubation are used. We try not to sedate the patient or induce drowsiness unless a nasogastric tube is draining the stomach contents.
