Viral illness: A physiological characteristic of viral diseases is that the density of white cells in the blood goes down from normal. Conversely, the white count elevates above normal in bacterial infections. These changes are reflections of the innate wisdom and power of the immune system to defeat foreign pathologic microbes, i.e., viruses and bacteria.
