Nerve pain: Random, sharp shooting pains like you are describing are often nerve pains that have different possible causes. They can be caused by the nerve being excitable and firing off an impulse, or can be due to the nerve being touched by the sides of a tight foramen or opening in the spine where the nerve comes out. A lot depends on the pattern or events surrounding the pain - see a neurologist.
