Chronic (more than 6 weeks) single joint (monoarticular) swelling is inflammatory or non-inflammatory. Inflammatory: certain infections or the monoarticular presentation of rheumatoid arthritis or spinal arthritis. Non-inflammatory: osteoarthritis, internal joint damage, or abnormal growths. This needs a rheumatology work-up.
