Inguinal hernia: You may inherit anatomical properties, that predispose to inguinal (most common type) hernia formation. This does not mean if your parent had a hernia that you will necessarily have a hernia. If a close relative has an inguinal hernia it does increase your risk for the same type of hernia. Umbilical hernia is the second most common hernia type ; is not related to family history.
