What is annencephaly?

Fetal abnormality: Anencepharly is a serious developmental abnormality in which the fetus does not develop the major brain components. It causes gross distortion of the head and is easily detected on ultrasound. It is a strong indication for termination although some will carry to term. The newborn will die in 12-48 hours as there is no treatment.
