Limit damage: Grinding at night (aka nocturnal bruxism) can be related to sleep disorders, medications, stress, infection and other conditions. Night guards do not "stop" grinding. Instead, they are used to limit the damage to the teeth and tm joints caused by the grinding. A properly fitted, well-made night guard will not interfere with breathing, swallowing, sleeping and, to some extent, speech.

Night grinding: Grinding of teeth at night is a fairly common occurrence and can be annoying and damaging. It is usually stress related. You may want to get yourself an otc night guard from the drug store to see if you can tolerate it in your mouth while sleeping. Then i would discuss this with your dentist and you may be a candidate for a custom lab made night guard to interrupt the habit and get some sleep.

Grinding teeth: Bruxism can cause severe tooth/bone support/jaw joint problems. Occlusal orthotic ( night guard) will protect these tissues, bt will not cure the problem. To eliminate grinding need to diagnose cause. Could be from malocclusion, stress, jaw malrelationship, and/or many other causes. Strongly suggest you wear night guard and have an orthodontic evaluation.
