See eye doctor: Try using artificial tears four times a day because many times the eyes sting water when they are dry as an overcompensation. If no relief, see eye doctor because the drain duct could be clogged or may have allergies/infection.

Many causes...: But commonly, allergy, dryness or irritation. Other causes that are more rare include viral and chemical conjunctivitis. Artificial tears will help if the cause is dryness and are worth a try. The non preserved tears are less likely to cause irritation and would be my first choice. If this doesn't help, see your eye specialist. Prescription medications may be required.
