Look forward: Today's evidence-based therapists give little concern to trying to figure out "why", and focus instead on what you must do to achieve the things -- inside and outside -- that you want. As an adult, you owe it to yourself to be comfortable around both genders. Your physician can suggest anything from a good book to a short course of therapy to help enable you to enrich your life this way.

Possibly, and: The larger issue is what you feel about it. You are not doomed to this, and it does not have to limit you. Often our fears develop through what important others (like parents) teach us -- with behavior carrying more impact than words. For instance, a woman who is abandoned by her husband may teach her child to be on guard around men. A good therapist can help you work with and overcome this.
