Strength: The best way to isolate the quads is to do leg extension excercises. That is to add weight to the ankle region and extend the leg at the knee. This can also be done using a leg extension machine at a gym. You can also internally or externally rotate the leg slightly to further isolate the medial or lateral component of the quad.
