20%: I am assuming you had a groin or inguinal hernia on one side. About 20% may have another hernia on the opposite side. Not all of these will be bothersome or require surgery. If you have had a repair already, the same side has a 2% chance of coming back. If you are having pain on either side, it could mean there is a hernia or a muscle sprain. If it is not getting better with rest and ice, see a md.

Groin hernia: If you are talking about a hernia in the groin, also known as an inguinal hernia, there is roughly a one in five chance you will get one on the other side in your lifetime. Don't limit your activity to try to avoid it - it will either happen or it won't, and the odds on in your favor it won't, but it is obviously not predictable. How this helps!
