O2: Really no way to predict it other than to say not smoking and avoiding exposure to smoke will certainly slow that progression down.

Technically now: When people with COPD were examined and they are found to need o2, 0 hour, 12 hour/day, and 18-20 hours/day were looked at. There is a significant improvement in longevity in people who used o2 at 18 hours or more. It is proven that desaturation or low o2 occurs with activity and sleep. It is the only medicine that does improve survival in these patients. We then recommend 20-24 hours per day o2.
