Different: Embolism is a clot or tumor or even a bullet that then travels in the vessel and lodges. This then prevents blood and nutrients from getting past. It causes thrombosis. Atherosclerosis can worsen in a vessel and cause blockage. This can also cause thrombosis. Vasospasm can decrease blood flow enough to block blood flow and cause thrombosis. Hope this helps.

Thrombosis=clot: Thrombosis=clot, ; refers to clot within a blood vessel, meaning artery or vein. Embolism=clot or other material that is loose and is traveling or has traveled in the artery or vein system to another location. Embolism can be a blood clot, tumor, part of a tumor, foreign body, or even plaque from the blood vessel wall. A thrombosis can become an embolism, e.g. A leg vein clot can go to lung veins.
