Herpes Type 1 & 2: Herpes simplex type 1 typically is the virus involved in causing oral lesions or cold sores. It can be transmitted to the genital area (and other parts of the body - herpes gladiatorum). Hsv 2 typically infects the genital area, but can be transmitted to the oral area.
