A member asked:

Are there gradation in severity of cardiomyopathy?

Severity of CM: Yes there is a gradation in severity. Two systems are used to describe the severity of cardiomyopathy (cm) both from a structural and functional standpoint. The so-called stages of heart failure describe the structural severity of the disease and the new york heart association functional classification describes the gradation in functional severity. Both are used to describe the severity of cm.

Yes: Severity of cardiomyopathy is usually graded in 2 ways: 1) weakness of heart muscle contraction, or "ejection fraction", with lower % meaning more severe disease. 2) severity of symptoms (shortness of breath and fatigue with activity)--measured in new york heart association class i-iv (higher is more severe). These two factors are related, though not always concordant in a given patient.
