???: Smoking and alcohol should not definitively effect the chance of pregnancy. If mid cycle, when your ovulating, unprotected sex does not yield a pregnancy after many tries, than there may be another issues at play and a fertility assessment may be warranted. Certainly, he should stop smoking and drinking in excess.

Hard to say: With this history one or both of you may not be fertile. He should certainly make better health choices, but quitting either does not guarantee that either of you can parent a child.
