Thick mucus in throa: You may be mouth breathing and/or have post nasal drip. Both can lead to drying of mucus as it moves from the back of the nose to the throat, causing it to thicken and "stick" to the back of the throat. This leads to the sensation of a lump in the throat which can wake you up with the urge to cough and clear your throat. Stay hydrated, make sure you don't snore, try saline gargles. See your doc.
