Rare, but real: Ruptured appendix leads to death in about 3/1000 appendicitis patients. Usually the very elderly or extremely young. It certainly prolongs your recovery - extending post op hospital stay in our hands from about 2 hrs to about 3.5 days, and requires antibiotics for several days. Hope this helps. Good luck.
