related to REM sleep: There are 2 main disorders, i feel you mean night terrors more than nightmares, the night terrors very common on toddler, usually the child wakes up cries, looks spacy, might open her/his eyes but also looks confused, the episode lasts few minutes and the child does not remember the episodes next morning, usually happens during deep sleep, and the cause is unsmooth transition from stage n2 to n3.
