Why?: It's easy to get a herpes blood test--your doctor has just checks the hsv-2 igg box on the order form. There's no need to see an infectious disease doctor, as much as we love your business. However, the test will only tell you whether you have the virus, not whether you need treatment. We only people who have outbreaks, not people with a positive test. Why get tested? It's not a standard test.

Discuss with doctor: This issue should be handled by your primary care physician without any problems. You don't need a specialist for this concern. Also, if you have an obstetrician that you visit regularly, he/she can also be the doctor to talk about this. In the process it would be wise to be tested for other std's, including HIV (aids).

Primary care MD : You don't have to see an infectious disease specialist. Ask for a referral to a primary care physician (family practice or internal medicine), and ask the physician to draw blood for antibodies to herpes simplex type 1 and 2, igg and igm titres.
