Knuckle cracking: I am not sure anyone knows for sure, but the phenomenon is thought to be related to gas (maybe carbon dioxide) forming bubbles in the synovial fluid from your joints, being released suddenly upon manipulation. There is no evidence to support that it causes arthritis or any other sequelae.
