Central lines: During an emergency resuscitation, it is necessary to rapidly administer fluids as well as medications intravenously. This is easier to do via the larger caliber "central" veins rather than the peripheral veins. Therefore, a central line is often quickly established in the subclavian vein, internal jugular vein, or femoral vein. These can also be useful for drawing venous blood for urgent labwork.
