A member asked:

The lunula on my two big toes are missing and my toenails are slightly discoloured (orange/brown). does this indicate a fungal infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Fungal Toenails: This question is asked daily at our office. In short, nails are protein like calluses and thicken due to constant pressure or trauma to protect your body. Sometimes they are discolored due to the pigment in your integument and do not contain fungal elements or growth. Treatment with a topical has limited to poor results. Oral anti-fungals give better results, liver profile test recommended.
