Yes: White rice has a high glycemic index, which means it causes a rapid rise in your blood sugar. Part of the Insulin response to that rapid increase in blood sugar makes you fat. A tiny amount won't hurt, but it makes it difficult to lose weight. Replace the bread with vegetables. Not rice. Starch is not a required part of a meal. You can get calcium from yogurt, cheese, sardines, greens.
