oral herpes: Oral herpes is a viral infection from the herpes simplex virus. It usually starts as one or more blisters that break and leave a grey, cratered painful ulcer. It can occur anywhere in the mouth, and like any viral infection, may be accompanied by fever and muscle aches. They are sometimes mistaken for canker sores (aphthous ulcers), which are not caused by a virus. See your dentist to be sure.
