can intelligence be inherited?

Partly: Intelligence is a combination of genetics and environment. It is the age old "nature vs nurture" controversy. Perhaps the best thing you can do for yourself is to participate in healthy, stimulating activites to broaden your mind.

0.7-0.8: Iq is widely found to be between 0.7 and 0.8 heritable which is fairly high for a human behavioral trait. But there is still a lot of room for environmental influence. It is very controversial subject, however. For a good overview of the arguments in favor of high heritabiliity, see "the bell curve" by murray. Heritability is not the same in all iq ranges.

Intelligence, like : Everything else we have, is from genetics + environment. Long ago, i heard the famous geneticist, dave smith, say it was more linked to maternal than paternal iq. Truth is, we get equal #'s of genes from mom & dad. Children of moms who didn't graduate from hs have 7x the risk of the gen'l population for intellectual disability, maybe because moms still impact a child's environment more than dads.

Ever since my own " gifted" kids overheard my quoting Dr.Smith, their answer to WHY did you do THAT ? has been "genetics + environment ! "

"g factor": For about 40-50% of the traits measured in an iq test, doing well (or not) in one correlates very highly with doing well (or not) in another. It seems there is something they all have in common, and this unknown something is called the g-factor. It also appears to be the mostly highly heritable component of iq. Many theories exist as to what g is. It appears much like cpu "processing speed".

Aptitude vs intelligence test?

IQ is broader: An IQ test is a broad measure of knowledge is many areas, whereas aptitude is the ability in a more focused area. A standard IQ test, the weschler IQ measures the average IQ at 100 with a standard deviation of 15. This means than an IQ below 70 falls into the range of mental retardation and an IQ above 130 is in the "superior" range. An aptitude test measures things like an aptitude to build.

Does tobacco smoking actually enhance the intelligence?

Dr. Michael Sinclair
Family Medicine 38 years experience
It doesn't: Some people think that pipe smokers are smart. They might be, but it has nothing to do with tobacco. Smoking tobacco does not make you smart. It kills you with cancer and heart disease. It is true that it can help you lose weight, but the risk is not worth it. Diet and exercise are a much better choice to make you smarter.

Can music affect intelligence?

Maybe, depends: There is no good answer as to whether passive listening to music increases intelligence, or of so, by much. But like many arts, intense involvement in and learning of music will definitely improve intelligence--especially as measured broadly.

There is some research classical music heals the brain thru the sound it causes and the nervous system. The more relaxed and free you to feel to explore, the higher your chances of increasing your intelligence. Later in life, math ability correlates highly to musical ability.
