See below: If the diet is lacking in nitrates, lack of nitrite in urine is meaningless. There may be infection with organisms that do not make nitrite, or the infection may be in the urethra. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is in the best position to do that.
