Neither: Elevate your leg and it should decompress in less than a minute. If it does not, you may have superficial thrombophlebitis and may be able to feel a clot there. This can become red and painful. Treatment is compression stockings, Ibuprofen and warmth.

Compresses: I wouldn't recommend either as it may damage your skin You would be better served by using support or compression socks Also evaluation by a vascular surgeon will allow options for treatment to be discussed

The gold standard for treatment is to have a venous ultrasound to make the diagnosis and aid in the formulation of a treatment plan. Support hose may help temporarily. See a vein specialist.
