Some possibilities: The flu vaccines do work, both the shot and the nasal spray. Sometimes the protection is partial, so that a person may still get the flu but a milder case of it. Other times, the person gets "flu-like" symptoms that are caused by one of many other viruses (instead of the flu virus). The flu vaccine protects only against the true influenza viruses.

It depends...: They only help if they cover the current virus that is causing an influenza outbreak. The virus changes from year to year and the cdc makes an educated guess on which strains to cover in any given year. Fyi- you may not be getting actual influenza. There are thousands of viruses that can present with similar symptoms. The only way to know for sure is go to a clinic and get tested.
