Estrogen stimulation: Cervical mucus is stimulated by the hormone estrogen. If you are taking an estrogen supplement it will stimulate it. Birth control pills have estrogen and Progesterone so the mucus is suppressed. Sometimes the mucus of the cervix will be stimulated for days before the ovulation occurs. As a woman gets older there is still some estrogen production even if she is not ovulating anymore.
