im now taking zoloft 100mg cymbalta (duloxetine) 30mg  for 2wks then i will stop zoloft and just take cymbalta (duloxetine)... will this cause weight loss or gain?

Generally: Some medications dont exactly cause weight gain but if you feel depressed sometimes you dont eat so when you take an antidepressant and start feeling better your appetite comes back and you end up gaining weight. This doesnt always happen but some people treat the weight gain as causal to the medication when in fact its due to improved mood which leads to improved appetite. Just watch what you eat.

Zoloft (sertraline): Zoloft (sertraline) can be very effective for treating anxiety. Insomnia can occur occassionally as a side effect. When that happens, i usually recommend that it be taken in the morning. It can cause weight loss or gain (but weight gain is more common).

i've been on lexapro (escitalopram) 10mg for 7 yrs for anxiety & gained 40lbs from it. i'm about to switch to zoloft 25mg. side effects from switching? weight loss?

Accepted Answer

Cross titration: Zoloft and Lexapro (escitalopram) are both metabolized by the same pathway.  As such, a cross titration is usually recommended to avoid any adverse effects.  As a side note, that's a pretty low dose of Zoloft -- so you might not achieve an adequate response.  If this happens, don't hesitate to increase the dose (with your doctor of course). i am on 250mg of synthroid (thyroxine) and 100mg of zoloft.  i am also overweight.  is there a medicine that can be prescribed to help with weight loss.

Yes: There are many prescription drugs available to help w/weight loss but none are w/o potential side effects.Taking medication w/o healthy nutrition & regular exercise won't work. In fact, most drugs only offer a few kgs more weight loss compared to placebo. Ask your doc about orlistat, phentermine, sibutramine & recently approved Qsymia & belviq (lorcaserin).

Garcinia cambogia: The evidence for effectiveness of garcinia cambogia in weight loss is mixed.  However, there are no direct interactions with the medications you're taking.  This doesn't mean there would be none, just that there are none published.

my pdoc advised me zoloft, (sertraline) anafranil and zyprexa. my weight increasing very rapidly. shall i take glucophage for weight loss without prescription?

No: The first thing is to look into healthy diet and exercise routine. Although, the above medications can cause increase in appetite, you should be able to change your diet to eat healthier to minimize their adverse effects.  Also, you should work with your doctor and see if there are less aggressive weight gainer alternatives that can be used instead of some of those meds (abilify (aripiprazole) vs. Zyprexa).

Not Really.: There is no easy or magic pill to promote weight loss. Diet diet diet! taking the meds you have noted raises concern for potentially dangerous interactions with many otc supplements. I advise against taking them.

Not a good idea: please call your pharmacy for possible side effects and drug-drug interactions.

Yes: Yes, but calories burned will need to exceed calories taken in to lose the weight.If you are struggling with this you could discuss the possibility of change of meds with your provider.  If you have atypical depressive symptoms, wellbutrin (bupropion) may be a good option. Lexapro tends to be the most weight neutral of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
