Emotional problems: Emotional occasions are accentuated with a drop in estrogen, which occurs just prior to menstruation. If you can take supplemental estrogen, you might consider a low dose (estrogen/progestin) birth control regimen, which stops ovarian estrogen production, whereas the estrogen in the bcp is much lower and constant.  See your gyn physician for other potential hormone treatments.

Find the cause: It's not a common finding, but if you have it, it is 100%.  Thrombocytopenia is something that should never be trifled with; if it gets worse it can cause bad bleeding.  In a young woman especially, it can herald lupus.  Medications, having one's period, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, allergy to quinine in a cocktail, and a variety of other processes can be the cause.

Timing mui important: The timing is much more important. And you should always be using a condom and she could be using any of a number of very effective means of contraception.

Emergency contracept: Can cause side effects. It is used to prevent pregnancy. The exact instructions depend on which product you are using however, many  (such as plan b) instruct to take the pill within 72 hours of failed contraception. The sooner it is taken after intercourse, the more protection it confers.

There : There are many different birth control pills...All are based on various forms of estrogen and progesterone, but the doses very quite a bit.  While you may have gotten "sick" from one type, there are other lower doses that might be better tolerated for you.  As for other options, you can consider condoms, iud's (intrauterine devices) which are small pieces of plastic or copper that are inserted into the uterus in the doctor's office with minimal discomfort and no anesthesia needed that can stay in for 5-10 years and be easily removed if future pregnancy is desired, a vaginal ring that you yourself put into the vagina once per month, a contraceptive patch that goes on the skin, and permanent procedures include tubal ligation (tubes tied) for women and vasectomy for men.  There are a few other ones as well, but aren't used commonly.
