Birth control: Birth-control is highly effective when taken correctly. The withdrawal method is very ineffective. If you are using birth control correctly then adding the withdrawal method is not necessary. If you want extra reassurance use condoms.

Not efffective: The withdrawl method is when the male pulls his penis out of the vagina before ejaculation occurs. This is a very poor method of birth control.  Even prior to ejaculation, the penis releases small amounts of fluid that contain sperm.

5-7 days. : Birth control withdrawal bleeds as experienced by taking oral contraceptives would last up until you take the last sugar or placebo pill. 
It is quite normal.

Start a new pack: If you are taking oral contraceptive pills continuously and then take inactive pills, you are correct, you will get withdrawal bleeding.  You did not mention how many days of inactive pills you have taken.  There are 7 days of inactive pills in a 1-month pill pack.  The withdrawal bleed usually starts (and ends) during the 7 days of inactive pills.  Starting a new pack will stop withdrawal bleed.

Menses: Withdrawal period means what it implies. When you stop BCP within a week you will have a menstrual bleeding. Before that you may have cramping and spotting.  Hope this helps.

Withdrawal ineffecti: You should know that withdrawal is NOT a backup method at all. Your girlfriend could still get pregnant. Condoms can slip off, have a hole or slip partially off. By themselves don't provide the best of methods of birth control but they do offer protection from STDs. Your girlfriend could use foam or cream spermatocide with you using a condom. This would be more effective.
