will my nail fall off if black after hammer hit the finger?

Depends on damage: If there is bleeding under the nail that extends to the base of the nail, then you will probably lose the nail.  This may take weeks to months to come off. It will usually get pushed off as the new nail grows out. Usually the nail will grow back normally unless the nail bed has been damaged. If nail bed damage has occurred, then some type of nail dystrophy will be permanent.  Dr l.

Paperclip: Bend paper clip to have a straight end. Secure with a clamp or pliers so you can hold over a flame until red-hot. Press into the nail until the blood runs out from under the nail. You have a crush injury so it will be sore ; swollen for a few days, longer if the bone was crushed. The black color will gradually be shed off the end in 6 months. The small, round hole will reach the end of the nail so.

should i get a finger xray? i hit my finger with a hammer on the weekend.  it is still swollen and hurts to touch or move but doesn't look bent.  there is blood under 1/3 of the nail.

See doctor: Blood under nail can be drained which can prevent nails from falling off . You can buddy strap the finger and see doctor who can access if X ray is needed.

Likely clotted: The blood is likely clotted by now and will not drain by pricking. Pricking as self treatment is not recommended anyway as it is likely to introduce infection.

Trauma?: Black lines run the full length of the nail. Multiple lines are normal and are seen more commonly in african americans. An isolated black line is a nevis or. Ole which may represent a melanoma. An isolated black line needs to be biopsied.

my finger nail is throbbing, it just started throbbing for no apparent reason. i didn't slam it in  or hit it on anything. my nail looks healthy.

Infection: Pain or throbbing is usually a sign of infection.  Try soaking the hand or finger in warm water 3 times a day for about 20 minutes.  If this doesn't help or it gets worse you may need to see your doctor.
