Depends on damage: If there is bleeding under the nail that extends to the base of the nail, then you will probably lose the nail.  This may take weeks to months to come off. It will usually get pushed off as the new nail grows out. Usually the nail will grow back normally unless the nail bed has been damaged. If nail bed damage has occurred, then some type of nail dystrophy will be permanent.  Dr l.

hit top of finger by nail with hammer. bottom of finger quite swollen and black. do not think it is broken . what can be done to reduce swelling?

Paperclip: Bend paper clip to have a straight end. Secure with a clamp or pliers so you can hold over a flame until red-hot. Press into the nail until the blood runs out from under the nail. You have a crush injury so it will be sore ; swollen for a few days, longer if the bone was crushed. The black color will gradually be shed off the end in 6 months. The small, round hole will reach the end of the nail so.

should i get a finger xray? i hit my finger with a hammer on the weekend.  it is still swollen and hurts to touch or move but doesn't look bent.  there is blood under 1/3 of the nail.

See doctor: Blood under nail can be drained which can prevent nails from falling off . You can buddy strap the finger and see doctor who can access if X ray is needed.

: The extent of the local hand injury is unclear based on your post, but the bruising may signify a small fracture.  An Xray of the hand should answer this concern.  See your doctor and commence evaluation.

Yes see your MD: some times blood collected in the closed compartments of hand in return the increased pressure inside may damage the nerves and blood vessels , your doctor will evaluate and if needed will refer you to a hand surgeon

i hit my toe nail a year ago and now it has this dark blue color with brown/ yellow spots.a new one is growing beneath it.how long is it going to take?

Slow growth: The toenail grows very slowly and it can take up to 18 months for a (whole new) toenail to grow out.

i had a hard brown lump on my butt check close to crack. i was going to the bathroom and hit with my nail. it started to bleed. it hurt to the touch but now it hurts . i put some antibiotic on it and covered it. what else should i do so embarrassing?

: Nothing to be embarrassed about! Probably a skin abscess -- maybe characterized as a perianal abscess, depending on its distance from you anus. These are very common problems; any primary care doc or your gyn has cared for many such cases. Make an appointment ASAP to confirm the likely diagnosis:  you may need an antibiotic prescription, and perhaps minor surgery for drainage. Good luck!

Yes: Assume this is not your first tetanus shot. This is not a likely source of tetanus, anyway.
