why is there only 28 pills in birth control?

"Normal Period": Most contraceptive pills come in 28 day varieties to mimic the "normal menstrual cycle" length. The bleeding from the pill is hormonal withdrawal bleeding to indicate that it is time to start a new pack. Some pills come in 3 month and 1 year lengths, and extends the withdrawal bleeding time to those intervals.

To Mimic Nature: The predominant pattern of natural menses occurs on a 28 day cycle. (although some cycle on shorter or longer intervals) the bcp with either 21 active/pack with 7 days off or 21active +7 dummy pills in a 28 day pack for daily use is an industry standard. The 7 days off allows menstral flow, some give continuous active pills for 3-4 mo or more & decrease # of menses they have /yr.

You probably do.: Plan b can change your period . It can delay or make it early, can make it heavy or light. I wonder why you took plan b since you are on bcp since bcp could protect a pregnancy by itself. If you do not see your period i suggest to you to take a pregnancy test.

Only if inactive: Many of the very low dose pills provide some hormonal input into the "inactive pills" to facilitate a easier egress into the withdrawal bleeding period. Thus, some of those pills are not "inactive". Daily  pill taking consistency is important as our lives are very busy and overstressed. It is easy under those circumstances to "forget" ;to resume the pill after stopping the "inactive pills."

BTB bleeding: Break through bleeding, esp towards the end of the active pills is not uncommon.  Make sure there were no missed pills, and there is no significant variation in when they are taken.  Bleeding through the inactive pills is what is expected. If there were missed pills, start the new pack on day 3 or 4 and use protection for the month (condom use always recommended for other benefits/protection)

Generally no: Continuous birth control pills - when you use active pills daily for a prolonged time, and no placebo pills - often leads to the absense of periods. During this time you do not ovulate: that is the primary way birth control pills work.

You are protected: The sugar pills are only there as a reminder and to keep you in a routine.  Actually taking them is optional, but resume your pills on schedule even if you are still having your period.  With most pills you are actually taking medication only 3 weeks and then being off for a week brings down a period.

Instead : Instead of taking your placebo pills, just start the new pack.  Hopefully, you'll just skip your period for the month.  Depending on the amount of estrogen in the pills you are on, you may experience a little spotting before your next period.  This is normal.  Good luck!

No, no, no: If you were sexually active during that time you weren't protected. So use another form of protection the rest of the month if you are active and be more careful in the future. They only are effective if you follow the instructions!
