Essential: Sodium is essential for cellular processes and is regularly excreted from the body, necessitating us to replenish it along with Potassium, magnesium, and other elements.   We usually get it through our food.  If we have too much, water accumulates extracellularly, causing swelling and higher blood pressure; too little, and cells are unable to process needed nutrients.  Balance is important.

Allergies?: There are many things that can cause a puffy face. If you are otherwise healthy the most common cause would probably be allergies. Please see your doctor for some testing to make sure that you do not have other problems as it could also something like a thyroid problem. If you do not then a trial of antihistamines may be helpful. Also I would try a very low sodium diet and avoid alcohol.

Qtr tsp (1,500 mg): Sodium should be reduced in prehypertension to 1.5 g (1,500 mg) per day (about 1/4 of teaspoon salt). That goal can be hard for some people to achieve, and if you find that the case, a more realistic may be &lt; 2.4 g/day (so many sources of food contain dietary sodium, like canned soup; also be aware that some foods labeled “No Salt” may contain trace sodium from additives).

Those meds are safe: Hi, those two medicines are safe and a good combination for you to take.  They are commonly prescribed together for multiple medical conditions related to the heart.  You should limit your sodium intake to less than 1500mg daily, in addition to eating lots of fruits and vegetables and losing weight.  And of course, continue to follow with your pcp and a cardiologist.

Not for you!: You need a good internist who will work you up and treat you appropriately. U say you have hi BP, hi Creatinine (prob. kidney damage). You don't want to take a sodium salt if your kidneys are sick.  I don't know what other medical issues you have but you live near UCLA and Cedars-Sinai. Get a good internist there and get treated right, not by the quack who treated Michael Jackson!

Unlikely: None of these would be typical presentations of either MCTD or Sjogren's syndrome.  You need a good internist or rheumatologist on your care team to help winnow the possibilities and care for your extant medical problem. Best wishes.

Temporary: When you ingest salt (sodium, potassium) in high amounts, this draws water with it to maintain a certain concentration.  The more water, the higher the blood volume and the higher the pressure.  Healthy kidneys eventually excrete the salt.
