i quit smoking, but now when i run, i get a smoker's wheeze. how can i get rid of this and the lower breath capacity?

Should improve: Depending onhow long and how much you smoked. Could take weeks or months. In longtime smokers it may never go away completely. A pulmonary function test will guide your doctor on proper treaent and allow him to give you your odds.

Call your surgeon: An infection could cause the fever.  If so, you need antibiotics.  Call your surgeon tonight to start that evaluation and treatment if necessary.

No: The more likely cause is that you are experiencing a gasping arousal from sleep apnea. I would recommend that you talk to your family doctor about this and get a referral to your local sleep disorder specialist. A gasping arousal occurs when you stop breathing and eventually become so shortof breath that you wake up gasping for air. This is quite different from an asthma attack which include symptoms of wheezing generally. The fact that it is very much sleep related would alsospeak for being part of a gasping arousal.

over the last 3 days i have randomly just run out of breath and it sort of feels like my heart has skipped a beat?  this is happening every 2 hours

Breathing &amp; Heart: Your symptoms may be physical or psychological or both and you need to find out the answer.  Please start w/a visit to your doctor.  If all is well, see a clinical psychologist who specializes in mood disorders.  Shortness of breath is common w/anxiety/panic.  Peace and good health.

Dysautonomia - MVP : You  may have dysautonomia which is associated with  mitral valve prolapse syndrome - neither are usually life threatening but both cause patients anxiety about their symptoms.  Read dr. Richard hoffman's book on mvp on amazon.Com.  Increase fluid intake, try magnesium supplements.

Asthma: That's more likely to be due to asthma. Perhaps you have a component of exercise-induced asthma. Your doctor can figure that out.
