Cough brown phlegm: Likely bronchitis with irritation and some blood streaking , but if fever may be pneumonia or TB, rarely  pulmonary embolism causes streaked cough( are you a smoker on birth control pills? because increases the risk) Since it is going on a week would seek medical attention at doctor /urgent care  today, may need antibiotics or other treatment.

Cough: Dark phlegm: This sounds like bronchitis or a cold or pneumonia. Sometimes when we cough a lot of violently we break small blood vessels and blood can get on or into the mucous. 

As long as you are not freely bleeding this is considered routine and normal.

For how long?: You have acute bronchitis. Most likely viral but sometimes bacterial. Pneumonia is also a possibility.  Do you have fever? You should see your doc if you're not getting better.

Force fluids x 8-10 glasses/day of electrolyte rich fluids (Powerade, Gatorade, Vitamin Water, G) and 4-6 bowls/day of broth spray, followed by nasal saline spray, warm water gargles or neti pot. Carefully monitor temperature every 4-6 hrs, bullion, consume or soup. Hot steam showers 3-4 times/day. Nasal saline, Tylenol as needed, Robitussin DM or Mucinex DM as needed. Zinc

If you have been: suffering from a bad cough, you have lung cancer and require supplemental oxygen - I would encourage you to let your physician/ oncologist/ pulmonologist know. Morning Phlegm: Think of gravity as your friend during the daytime when all the phlegm drains down but when you lay down at night, gravity is not your friend and those sinuses fill up with fluid. Then you wake up and gravity pulls everything down the back of your throat.
