Musculosketetal pain: Pain which increase on change of position is usually coming from muscles and bones, try Ibuprofen for a 2-3 days and see your internist.

Rib bruise or break: You may have a rib bruise or fracture. Were there any recent injuries or infections? 
Try Motrin and a heating pad until you are able to see your PCP.

Likely GI, but...: In general, such a pain does not sound like heart pain, which is what most people would be concerned about.However, young people can have heart attacks. Such things as family history, smoking, gender, other diseases like high BP and diabetes increase the risk.However, i would think musculoskeletal or GI like reflux more likely.Bad pain, worsening, radiation, nausea, sweating or short breath-be seen.

Rib cage pain: Carefully have your spleen assessed as well as your costochondral junction. An enlarged spleen can be seen in the setting of mono or other blood dyscrasias.

Gallbladder?: While this is fairly nonspecific, pain in this location could be from gallstones or an inflamed gallbladder. Best to see your primary care provider for a more complete evaluation if its bad enough. Hope this helps!

Front or back?: If the sharp rib pain is more towards your back, consider kidney infection. Check your urine color and smell.
If the pain is more side ot front lower ribs, it may be intercostal neuralgia, an inflammation of the nerve of each rib. This pain is sharp, and may radiate from back to front. If the pain is at the very lowest rib, it may be "slipped rib syndrome" where the twelfth rib catches

Pinched nerve: Assuming there has been no recent rib cage injury and If the pain us very sharp, fleeting and brought on by a deep breath, it is probably due to a pinched intercostal nerve that runs between 2 ribs. These tend to resolve after a few days, but if they don't or if symptoms worsen, see your physician. In the meantime avoid activities that strain or stress the rib cage.

Muscle Sprian: This is probably a muscle strain or sprain. I would suggest rest and a NSAID to relive the discomfort. You might want to tone down the next workout to that area.

?pleurisy: First, it doesn't sound heart related. Secondly, it is important to determine whether you have cough, fever, or other symptoms. It could be costal(rib) musculoskeletal pain or mild inflammation of the membrane that lines your left lung(pleurisy). Please see a doctor.
