Muscle cramps: Sometimes muscles cramps such as you describe are due to potassium or magnesium deficiency. Make certain you eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Warm soaks: Hand cramps can occur for a number of reasons. Best initial treatment is to stop the activities that are provoking the cramping, rest the hand, and soak the hand in a tub of warm water. You want the temperature very warm, but not hot enough to burn. Rest the hand is the water for 5 minutes, then gently massage and stretch the fingers while in the water for 5 more minutes.

Muscle spasm..: Muscle fatigue/injury, over-used, poor blood circulation (i.E laying on arm too long while asleep), medication use, neurologic diseases/nerve compression, low potassium/calcium etc...Can cause muscle spasm. At times, no cause can be found.  There are treatments, but you should get evaluated by doc first if this is bothersome/recurring for you. Keep well hydrated. Good luck.

Hyperventilation: Carpopedal spasms happen with low ionized calcium in the blood, usually when people hyperventilate from anxiety.  These spasms are brief, and you also have tingling around the mouth and lightheadedness. If you don't seem to be hyperventilating, and the spasms are prolonged, carpal tunnel syndrome is common.  There are rare neurological diseases as well.
