Perhaps: Some individuals that become brain dead after a drug over dose can become organ donors.  If the organs in question are functioning,  they can be removed.  However, there may be increased risk for the transfer of infections such as hepatitis b and c, and HIV that are often associated with illicit drug use.  Careful testing for these infections and informed consent from the recipient is needed.

No: Transplanted organs remain what they are. That's why patients will require lifelong anti-rejection drugs.

Balance scarce suppl: If the world were ideal, no one would have a need for organ transplants but at least if they did, there would be an adequate supply to meet the demand. Unfortunately, more than 110, 000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ from only about 7000 organ donors each year from the organ donor pool. This creates a huge dilemma on who is most appropriate to transplant where age plays a major role.

can you explain if it's possible to grow organs from someone else and transplant them onto you?

Accepted Answer

No: With current technology, it is not possible to grow an organ in a donor that is specifically designed to be compatible with an intended recipient. We can only test compatibility between donors and recipients to see if a transplant will be acceptable. Attempts are being made to grow functional organs from cells in a laboratory, but, currently, they are not safe or sufficient for transplant.

Yes: In general, younger is better than older. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of organs so we are increasingly using older, less healthy organs. When possible, we try to put older organs into older patients who may not be healthy enough to wait around for a better, younger organ.

Intestinal transplan: Yes, intestinal transplant is performed at select centers.

Accepted Answer

No: It is not yet possible to do this.

Accepted Answer

Not Quite: It is probably a generation away, but these kind of advances can come fast.  There are attempts with stem cells to grow some specific organs, and some attempts to de-cellularize organs and replace them with the recipients own cells.  There are also ongoing projects to manufacture micro kidneys that purify the blood.

Accepted Answer

Good question : That has been a topic of continued research for decades.  Unfortunately animal or xenotransplants, cause very severe rejection and would not last long.  The future holds the promise of genetically engineering such animal organs so they will not trigger severe rejection.  Today pig hear valves can be altered so they can be maintained in a human.
