If your joint is in-: -good condition, a menisectomy would be advised, even if borderline. This can slow down further degeneration &amp; possibly avoid a replacement. Hyaluronic acid if the joint is bad &amp; the only option is a replacement, if you are one of the people that get great results, you still may avoid a TKA. If successful they do need to be repeated over time.

how does a meniscus get torn?

Usually by twisting: The menisci are attached to the top of the tibia, shin bone, and cradle the end of the femur or thigh bone.  These are the two longest bones in the body.  As they move the meniscus should glide with the smooth surfaces of these two bones. If it gets caught between them a relatively minor seeming force can apply enough shear force to tear the meniscus.

Joint line tender: If you have torn either meniscus, it will usually be tender to touch.  In addition there will usually be some fluid in the joint and the pain is usually brought on with a twisting or pivot motion.  An orthopaedic surgeon can often tell by examining your knee and an MRI will usually confirm the diagnosis.

Depends: It will depend on the degree of damage. If it is not fully torn, you may be helped by physical therapy, brace wearing, gait retraining etc. If it is fully torn and there is a lot of arthrtis, your best bet would probably be surgery.

Meniscal tears: There are several types of meniscal tears (see pic). Some meniscal tears occur w/ acute injury & some as degenerative changes (over time). Common symptoms include pain, swelling, clicking/ popping, locking/ catching, giving way, and/ or limited range of motion. Hope this helps. It is best if you let a physician examine you and possibly order an MRI to be sure.

Interesting term?: A mensicus usually refers to the cartilage in the knee.  If the cartilage comes loose and bend or moves as the knee is moving, then it can get caught in the joint between the bones, and will be pinched.  This can cause pain, can cause a piece to be broken off and get loose in the knee and can cause problems for you.  If you are concerned, see an orthopedist or your pcp.  May need more diagnostics.

Arthritis: The meniscus acts as the cushion/shock absorber in the knee. When all or part of it has to be removed, the cartilage and bone see more stress over time and degrade faster - arthritis. However, leaving a torn meniscus and not taking it out can cause more stress as a flap can rub raw the cartilage much faster than having less meniscus.
